The Hopwood Clock Tower, also known as Kerei Te Panau, is a prominent landmark in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Hopwood Clock Tower History
- Origins: The clock was originally housed in the Chief Post Office of Palmerston North. However, due to safety concerns following the 1942 Wairarapa earthquake, the clock was removed and placed in storage2.
- Construction: In 1953, local businessman Arthur Hopwood donated £10,000 to build a new tower in The Square to house the clock. The construction was completed in 19572.
- Renovations: Over the years, the tower has undergone several renovations. Notably, in 2007, it was refurbished to meet modern building standards and a lantern-style cross was added to the top2.
- Cultural Significance: The Maori name "Kerei Te Panau" honors a local Rangitane chieftain.
The Hopwood Clock Tower remains a cherished part of Palmerston North's heritage and continues to be a focal point in The Square.
